The board has issued an unusual ultimatum to American and to Gate Gourmet, a major airline caterer that is negotiating with its own union workers, one person briefed on the discussions said. The administration is counting on the idea that the pressure will make the companies settle to avoid the stoppage. “Our flight attendants deserve to be paid as well as the best paid flight attendants in the business,” American said in an emailed statement. The union also wants retroactive pay to cover the five years since flight attendants last received a raise, something it says American is not offering. The flight attendants haven’t received a pay raise since 2019.
