Empire State Building to be Illuminated in Violet in Tribute to NYU’s Class of 2024

The Empire State Building will be lit up in violet tonight, following NYU’s 191st All-University Commencement Exercises which were held on Wednesday, May 15, in Yankee Stadium to salute NYU’s graduating class. Beginning at dusk and through 2 a.m., graduates near and far will be able to view the lights of the tower through the Empire State Building webcam. This year’s commencement speaker was Martha Minow, the 300th Anniversary University Professor at Harvard University and former dean of Harvard Law School. Minow, a celebrated legal scholar and a leading voice on a range of issues, from justice and equality to conflict and extremism, author of many books, and law teacher and mentor of generations of lawyers and leaders for 43 years, addressed the graduates and guests on behalf of all the honorary degree recipients, who also included Ouided Bouchamaoui, a central figure in the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, which was awarded the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize; and Katalin Karikó, the co-winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her contributions to the development of the mRNA technology used in the BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to prevent COVID-19 infection.
